Side Bends

Lean like a pendulum; stretch the waist you forgot you had.

With one arm arcing overhead, bend sideways from the waist — then swing up and over to the other side.

How to do it

  1. Stand tall, feet a little wider than hip-width.
  2. Raise one arm overhead and bend your torso to the opposite side.
  3. Feel the stretch along your raised side, from hip to fingertips.
  4. Swing back through center and bend to the other side in rhythm.

Breathing: Exhale into each bend, inhale through center.

Questions

Should my hips move?

Keep the hips level and centered; the bend comes from the waist up. A slight natural sway is fine at this cheerful tempo.

Why do side bends feel so good in the morning?

Sleep compresses the spine and shortens the side body. Rhythmic lateral stretching re-lengthens it and gets fluid moving in the joints.

Radio Taiso is gentle, but it is still exercise. If you have a medical condition, an injury, or any doubt, check with a health professional before starting.
